Transmission fluid change cost guide

Quick answer: A transmission fluid drain and fill typically costs $100–$250, and a fluid exchange (“flush”) costs $150–$400 at an independent shop. CVTs, dual-clutch transmissions and many European cars cost more, often $200–$500, because they need special fluid and procedures.

How often should you change transmission fluid?

  • Check your owner’s manual, especially the “severe service” schedule (towing, stop-and-go, hot climates).
  • Many automatics: every 30,000–60,000 miles under severe use, or 60,000–100,000 miles under normal use.
  • Many CVTs: every 25,000–60,000 miles, depending on the maker. Regular changes matter on CVTs; see Nissan CVT Problems.
  • Some makers call the fluid “lifetime”, but many transmission specialists still recommend changing it around 60,000–100,000 miles.

Drain and fill vs. flush

A drain and fill is gentle and cheap, but only replaces part of the fluid, so it’s often repeated two or three times. A fluid exchange replaces almost all the fluid in one visit. On a high-mileage transmission that has never had a fluid change, some shops prefer a simple drain and fill to avoid sudden changes, while a flush done with the correct fluid and equipment is generally safe.

Signs your transmission fluid needs attention

  • Fluid that is dark brown or black or smells burnt.
  • Harsh, delayed or slipping shifts.
  • Leaks (red or pinkish fluid under the car).
  • Transmission overheating warnings when towing.

If the transmission is already slipping badly, a fluid change won’t repair it. See Is It Worth Replacing a Transmission at 150,000 Miles?

How to save money

  • Use the exact fluid your manufacturer specifies; the wrong fluid can damage the transmission.
  • Do it at an independent shop or transmission specialist rather than a quick-lube chain.
  • Bundle it with other scheduled maintenance.
