Quick answer: The most common reason a car shakes or vibrates when braking is uneven or “warped” brake rotors. Replacing pads and rotors typically costs $300–$750 per axle at an independent shop. Other causes include sticking brake calipers, worn suspension parts and loose wheel bearings.
Causes and repair costs
Typical independent shop prices, October 2026.
| Cause | Typical symptoms | Repair cost |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven / warped front rotors | Steering wheel shakes when braking at speed | $300 – $750 per axle (pads and rotors) |
| Uneven rear rotors | Pulsation in the brake pedal or seat | $300 – $700 per axle |
| Sticking brake caliper | Car pulls to one side, burning smell, hot wheel | $250 – $600 per caliper (installed) |
| Worn suspension (tie rods, control arm bushings) | Shimmy over bumps and when braking | $200 – $800 |
| Bad wheel bearing | Humming noise that changes with speed | $250 – $600 per wheel |
| Tires out of balance or damaged | Shaking at speed, not only when braking | $15 – $25 per tire to balance |
| Loose lug nuts | Sudden vibration, clunking | $0 – $50 (tighten right away) |

Why rotors “warp”
Rotors rarely bend. What usually happens is uneven thickness: pad material builds up unevenly or the rotor wears unevenly, often after heavy braking, holding the brakes hard after a long downhill stop, or lug nuts tightened unevenly. You feel this as pulsation in the pedal or steering wheel.
Is it safe to drive?
A mild vibration isn’t usually an emergency, but get it checked soon. Stop driving and get help if:
- the car pulls hard to one side,
- the brake pedal feels soft or sinks,
- you hear grinding metal,
- or you smell burning brakes and one wheel is very hot.
Can rotors be resurfaced instead?
Sometimes. Machining (“turning”) rotors costs about $20–$40 per rotor, but many modern rotors are thin and below the minimum thickness after resurfacing. Since new aftermarket rotors are inexpensive, most shops replace them.
How to prevent it
- Bed in new pads properly (follow the manufacturer’s procedure).
- Avoid holding the brakes hard after heavy braking; let the car roll slightly when possible.
- Make sure the shop tightens lug nuts with a torque wrench, not just an impact gun.
- Replace pads before they wear to the metal.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my steering wheel shake only when braking?
Usually uneven front rotors. If it also shakes without braking, check tire balance and suspension too.
How long can I drive with warped rotors?
A short time, but braking distance and comfort get worse, and pads wear faster. Fix it within a few weeks.
